Technology in Miniature: American Textile Patent Models 1819-1840

Abstract

To obtain a patent in the nineteenth century, an inventor had to submit a written specification, a drawing, and a model to the United States Patent Office. This catalog is concerned with the textile patent models in the collection of the Division of Textiles of the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution. Forty early models and their accompanying drawings are discussed.
