Agreement with Fortuna
Director Ira Rubinoff and Jacques Lepage (left),
director of Empresa de Generación Eléctrica Fortuna,
S.A. [Fortuna Electric Company] signed a technical-
scientific collaboration agreement on Wednesday, June
6 at the STRI's director's offices in Tivoli. STRI and
EGE-Fortuna agreed to coordinate efforts and
technical knowledge on research projects oriented to
better understand the biological and hydrological
resources of the Fortuna Reserve in the Chiriquí
province. STRI will continue to use the Fortuna
facilities and will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Jorge L. Arauz Tropical

El director Ira Rubinoff y Jacques Lepage (izquierda), director de la Empresa de Generación
Eléctrica Fortuna, S.A., firmaron un convenio de colaboración científica y técnica el miércoles 6 de
junio en la Oficina del Director de STRI en Tívoli. STRI y EGE-Fortuna se comprometen a
coordinar esfuerzos y conocimientos técnicos en proyectos orientados a un mejor entendimiento de
la biología y los recursos hídricos de la Reserva Forestal Fortuna en la provincia de Chiriquí. STRI
seguirá usando las instalaciones de Fortuna y será responsable por el mantenimiento y operaciones
del Centro de Investigaciones Tropicales Jorge L. Araúz, localizado en la Reserva.

New staff scientist     Nueva científica
Following an international search, STRI selected marine biologist Rachel Collin, Ph.D. candidate at
the University of Chicago, to fill the position of tropical marine biologist with a research base in
Bocas del Toro. Collin is working on her doctorate dissertation “Evolution of mode of
development in Crepidula (Gastropoda: Calyptraeidae): causes and consequences.” She obtained a
master's degree at the University of Washington with the thesis “Comparative biology and
evolution of gastropod development” and has a bachelor's degree in Aquatic Biology from Brown
University. In 1998 Collin received a short-term fellowship from STRI, and conducted benthic
sampling in the Bay of Panama on board the R/V Urracá in 2000. She will join STRI in March 2002
and will be in charge of the development of the Bocas del Toro research station.
Luego de una búsqueda internacional, STRI seleccionó a la bióloga marina Rachel Collin, candidata
a doctorado en la Universidad de Chicago, para la posición de bióloga marina tropical para trabajar
en Bocas del Toro. Collin trabaja actualmente en su tesis de doctorado “Evolución de la modalidad
de desarrollo en Crepidula (Gastropoda: Calyptraeidae): causas y consecuencias.” Obtuvo una
maestría en ciencias en la Universidad de Washington con la tesis “Biología comparativa y evolución
del desarrollo de gastrópodos”, y tiene una licenciatura en Biología Acuática de la Universidad de
Brown. En 1998 Collin recibió una beca a corto plazo de STRI, y llevó a cabo muestreo béntico en
la Bahía de Panamá, a bordo del RV Urracá en 2000. Estará a cargo del desarrollo de estación de
investigación de STRI en Bocas del Toro.

                            El Panama América honors BCI on         
                                                   Environmental Day
To celebrate the International Environmental Day on Tuesday, June
5, the Panamanian newspaper El Panamá América published an
special edition of their section “Estilos” on Barro Colorado Island.
The eight-pages article “Un bastión del bosque tropical” by reporter
Yariela I. González, highlights Barro Colorado's history and its
importance as a Nature Monument and the various kinds of
research conducted there by scientists from around the world. The reporters
visited Barro Colorado with scientist Nélida Gómez and public information
director Mónica Alvarado.
Para celebrar el Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente el martes 5 de junio, el
periódico panameño El Panamá América publicó una edición especial de la
sección “Estilos” sobre Barro Colorado. El artículo de ocho páginas “Un
bastión del bosque tropical” por la reportera Yariela I. González, subraya la
historia de Barro Colorado y su importancia como Monumento Natural y las
diferentes investigaciones que se llevan a cabo en BCI por científicos de todas
partes del mundo. Los reporteros visitaron Barro Colorado con la científica
Nélida Gómez, y la directora de divulgación, Mónica Alvarado.

           The STRI's Security Office issued new
                                                  visitor ID's. Those allowed at Tupper,
                                                 Tivoli and Pastor's House will wear an
                                                 ID featuring the Tupper Laboratories
                                                and labeled “Instalaciones” in red.            
                                               Visitors to the Library will wear an ID       
                                            featuring the inside of the Library labeled
                                     “Biblioteca” in black. This ID grants access to
                                    the Library and public areas: Conference Center,
Corotú Bookstore, Cafeteria and gardens. The third ID features the Earl
S. Tupper sculpture and is labeled “Areas públicas” in red. These
visitors are only allowed in the public areas. Every employee is
responsible to report persons wearing a wrong Visitor's ID, or not
wearing any. Please remember to wear your STRI ID.
La Oficina de Seguridad de STRI emitió nuevas identificaciones para los
visitantes. Aquellos que pueden entrar a Tupper, Tívoli y Pastor's
House usarán una identificación con una foto de los Laboratorios
Tupper y dice “Instalaciones” en rojo. Visitantes de la Biblioteca
llevarán una con una foto de la Biblioteca por dentro y dice “Biblioteca”
en negro. Con ésta también tienen acceso a las áreas públicas: Centro de
Conferencias, Librería Corotú, Cafetería y jardines. La tercera
identificación tiene el busto de Earl S. Tupper y dice “Areas públicas”
en rojo. Estos visitantes sólo tienen acceso a las áreas públicas arriba
mencionadas. Cada empleado es responsable por reportar cualquier
visitante que porte una identificación errada o que no esté portando
ninguna identificación. Recuerden que deben portar su identificación de
STRI todo el tiempo.
