Hrdli(5ka^Curator, Division of Physical Anthropology, United States National Museum This part has been prepared for the press since the end of 1924.It brings data on six important groups of the North AmericanIndians, The total number of skulls comprised is 1,350, subdividedas follows: The Algonkin and related Iroquois, 563 crania; theSiouan tribes, 285 crania; the Caddoes, 15 crania; the Salish andSahaptin, 15 crania; the Shoshonean, 69 crania; and the Californians,403 crania. In the preparation of the part the author has been assisted by hisaides. Dr. Paul Van Natta and Mr. Dale Stewart. To make the data as serviceable as possible, which is the mainobject of the laborious and rather thankless task, the author'srecords on crania preserved in other institutions have also beenincluded. Some wishes have been voiced that additional measurements begiven, on the face, palate, etc. These wishes have received earnestconsideration, and it is hoped that they may to some exte?t at leastbe complied with in the future. To do so now is a physical impossi-bility.It may be well to say here again that the object for publishingthese detailed data and the justification of the expense involved intheir publication is to make available to students in all lands reliableessentials on the rich collections of the United States NationalMuseum, supplemented with such records on material in otherinstitutions as the author has in the course of years been able togather. Such data can not but be of substantial use in anthropologi-cal studies of every nature, above all in those on human variation. The series are arranged throughout in ascending scale by thecephalic index. They give the size and shape of the vault, face, nose, and orbits, which comprises the first and indispensable informationthe student needs about every skull. Other measurements on the ?
