ATOLL RESEARCH BULLETIN No. 146 RECORDS OF MALLOPHAGA FROM PACIFIC BIRDS by A . Binion Amerson, Jr. and K . C . Emerson Issued by THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION Washington, D. C . , U. S. A. February 16, 1971 RECORDS OF MALLOPHAGA FROM PACIFIC BIRDS 3 by A. Binion Amerson, ~ r . ' , and K. C . Emerson INTRODUCTION The P a c i f i c Ocean Biologica l Survey Program (POBSP) of t h e Smithsonian I n s t i t u t i o n made 1,693 Mallophaga c o l l e c t i o n s from 66 b i r d species on 25 i s l a n d s and a t s e a i n t h e Cent ra l , Northern and Southeastern P a c i f i c from 1963 through 1969. This paper p resen t s a l i s t i n g of t h e hos ts , t h e Mallophaga, and t h e c o l l e c t i o n l o c a l i t i e s . The 66 hos t spec ies belong t o 5 orders and 13 fami l i e s of sea, shore, and land b i r d s . From these hos t s were co l l ec ted 96 Mallophaga species , belonging t o 2 suborders , 2 f ami l i e s , and 26 genera. Several sources were used i n assembling t h e common and s c i e n t i f i c names of t h e b i r d h o s t s . The names used i n t h e American Orn i tho log i s t s1 Union's Checklis t of North American Birds, 1957, 5 th e d i t i o n , were followed f o r species occurr ing i n North America. Seabird names agree with those which appear i n Watson (1966) and King (1967). Taxonomic order follows t h a t of Pe te r s (1931, 1934, and 1937) with t h e exception of the Procel la r i i formes , which follow Alexander -- e t a l . (1965), t h e Anseriformes, which follow Delacour (1954, 1959), and t h e Charadriiformes, which fol low Bock (1958). Mallophaga c l a s s i f i c a t i o n follows t h a t of Hopkins and Clay (1952 and 1955), Emerson (1962, 1964a, and 1964b), and Ryan and Pr i ce (1969a and 1969b).
