July 12. noon seminar speaker will be RACHEL LEVIN. STRI postdoctoral fellow. Vocal Behavior and Reproductive Strategies in a Tropical Duet- ting Wren, ~tb~I~ .n.i.&r.i.s;R~.i.l.l.l!Jl. Abstract: Vocal duetting has been reported to occur in over 200 species of birds. This behavior is generally assumed to be the result of a cooperative effort, serving similar functions for males and females. However, ob- servational data and results of playback, removal, and muting ex- periment s on bay wrens indicate that. in this species. duets are the result of differing male and fem a l e reproductive strategies s u c h that female son g s function in female-female aggression and males sing t o ac ousti c all y g uard their mates . Re fr eshm e nt s will be served duri ng a short break. At 1:30 p.m •• KATI E S IEV I NG. University o f Illi- n o i s . will g ive a second s emina r.
