Smithsonian Institution Libraries 2007 Annual Report Connecting. Ideas. Information. You. Smithsonian Institution Libraries 2007 Annual Report From the Director Donors of financial and in-kind resources and collections are like rare and expensive gems. Whether a gift allows us to acquire materials to support the Institution’s scientific and research staff, to upgrade and improve our technology, to repair and preserve essential volumes, to bring young scholars to explore our unique collections or to digitize our collections for a global audience, each donor plays a critical role in helping the Smithsonian Librar- ies pursue its goal of service excellence. Examples of all these activities are outlined under the highlights. In 2007, consultants queried Smithsonian library users and administrators about their library use and whether and how they see their research methods changing. Consultants found that “users universally agree that the library collections are one of three inseparable pillars of superior academic research, alongside staff and collections.” At the same time, “there is consensus that electronic materials—from both publishers and digitization of library collections—are the direction of the future….[However}, print materials are not going away any time soon. Thus, the libraries will continue to hold a mix of print and electronic materials over the next 20 years.” These important dis- cussions will help the Libraries determine its space and service needs for the future as part of our startegic plan This report covers the 2007 fiscal year (octiber 1, 2006—Septem- 2 ber 30, 2007). It honors the growing numbers of those who give, a gratify- ing testament to their faith in our future, the quality of our programs and the commitment and dedication of our staff. I thank you from the bot- tom of my heart. Nancy E. Gwinn 3Digital Library Smithsonian Libraries began work on its digi- tal library program in 1996. Since that time, nearly 500,000 pages of text have been digitized. Significant collections include over 26,000 pages of trade literature and 15,000 pages from the United States Exploring Expedition. As a leader of the Biodiversity Heritage Library project—an international consor- tium of ten natural history, botanical gar- den and botany librar- ies—the Libraries have contributed nearly 10% of the current 3.5 million pages avail- able. The Libraries is slated to contribute an additional 4-5 million pages over the next 2 years of the project. Smithsonian Contributions: 1,125 titles scanned since 2006 135,842 pages scanned 11 historical Contributions series completed Biodiversity Heritage Library: 2,172 volumes scanned 284,019 pages scanned: Nearly 2,500 titles since 1996 466,885 total pages scanned The Libraries’ websites, including the Galaxy of Knowledge and the Galaxy of Images once again had significant increase in usage. Over 4.7 million visi- tors came to the sites (an increase of 39% over FY 2006). These visitors registered over 316 million hits on the sites! And again, Smithsonian Libraries proved to be one of the “stickiest” Smithsonian web des- tinations with an aver- age visitor time of over 14 minutes. For a master space plan for the Librar- ies, the Smithsonian Offi ce of Policy and Analysis conducted three user needs assessment stud- ies, which included interviews with staff and users of all twenty libraries, along with inter- views of outside research libraries and library organi- zations. An execu- tive summary will be prepared with recommendations to the Libraries for consideration. Smithsonian Institution Libraries 2007 Annual Report4 Program Highlights By Aeroplane to Pgymy- land: Revisiting the 1926 Dutch and American Expedition to New Guinea by Smithsonian anthropologist Paul Mi- chael Taylor initiated a new Libraries series of original publications in a digital format, Sources and Critical Interpretations. The Libraries complet- ed digitizing the eleven Smithsonian Contribu- tions series and made them available online. For the first time since Secretary S. Dillon Ripley created the Smithsonian Institution Libraries in 1968, the Institution revised the Smithsonian Directive (500) that serves as the basic authorizing docu- ment for the Libraries. The Smithsonian Digital Repository became publicly avail- able at http://si-ddr. si.edu/dspace/ with 1,782 scientific articles, newsletters, reports, etc., from Smithsonian authors. The Libraries Book Conservation Labo- ratory hosted two conservators from the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia and the Georgia National Museum for a three- month, hands-on train- ing program. 2007 Resident Scholars The Libraries offers two Resident Scholar pro- grams, The Dibner Li- brary of the History of Science and Technol- ogy Resident Scholar Program. These generous do- nors have made it possible for the Librar- ies to purchase new acquisitions, preserve rare materials, advance technology and in- crease public outreach programs such as the annual Dibner Library Lecture. Already a jewel in the Smithsonian’s crown, the Libraries shine even brighter thanks to the kindness of the following indi- viduals.
