REPORT OX A COLLECTION OF BIRDS MADE BY PIERRELOUIS JOUY IN KOREA. By Austin II. Clark,Assistant Curator, Division of Marine Invertebrates, U. .s'. Xational Museum. The late Mr. Pierre Louis Jouy, during a residence of over threeyears in Korea within the period from 1881 to 1886, brought togethera magnificent collection of the birds of that country, his specimens, live hundred and fifty-four in number, having been taken mainly atFusan, Chemulpo, and Seoul, though a few are fromGensan. lie alsovisited the island of Tsushima in the Korean Straits, and obtained avery interesting series of the birds of that locality. This collection, much the most important ever made in Korea, has never been reportedupon. Mr. Jouy was engaged in work upon it at the time of his death, and subsequently Dr. Leonhard Stejneger made use of some of thematerial in his studies on the avifauna of Japan. Although he pub-lished comparatively little upon it, he went over the collection care-fully and identified most of the species. It was suggested that, asI had spent considerable time in the vicinity of the Korean coast, anaccount of Mr. Jouy's specimens could appropriately be preparedalong with the account of my own observations, and I therefore spentconsiderable time in the study of his material. This was, in themain, chiefly a review of the work already done by Mr. Jouy andDoctor Stejneger, and a confirmation of the results already attainedby them.A preliminary notice of the new forms which 1 detected among thematerial studied was published in these Proceedings, vol. 32, pp. 407-475.While this preliminary notice was in press a paper appearedwritten by that eminent authority on Asiatic birds, Mr. Sergius A.Biiturlin, of Wesenberg, Esthonia, in which certain of my new formswrere anticipated. Mr. Buturlin has had the kindness to assist me instraightening out the matter, and he has recently published a noteby which the confusion caused has been dispelled. I entirely agree Proceedings U. S. National Museum, Vol. 38.?No. 1735. 147 1 is PROCEEDINGS OF THE \ L770A W, 1// 8EUM. vol.38. with Mr. Buturlin in his conclusions, which are reviewed in detail inthe discussion of the birds involved, species of the genus Dendro-dromas.Owing to the press of work connected with animals other thanbirds, 1 have been unable to devote as much time to the preparationof this paper as the importance of the collection merited; but 1 havethought it better to present it in its present form than to retain itlonger in the hope of perfecting it, for it is advisable, in justice toMr. Jouy, that the sum of the results of his labors in Korea be givento the world as soon as possible, before the somewhat large numberof birds, first actually obtained in that country by him, but firstrecorded by others, is further increased. In addition to Mr. Jouy's birds I have included notices of someinteresting specimens obtained in southwestern Korea by Dr. WilliamLord Smith, of Boston, during November and December, 1902, andJanuary, 1903. Doctor Smith started from Mak-Po (in about lat.35? X.) and went down the west coast, partly by junk and partly onfoot, to the end of the peninsula, He was the first to make collec-tions in this part of the country. The classification herein followed is that of the American Orni-thologists' Union check list, which has been adopted so that com-parison between this paper and my report on the birds collected andobserved during the cruise of the U.S. Fisheries steamer AIbatrossmay he facilitated. L3, 1909, p. 233.In the preliminary paper describing the new forms in Mr. Jouy'scollection I diagnosed the Korean white-backed woodpecker, callingit Dryobates leucotos coreensis; but while my paper was in press, twomonths before it was published, Mr. Buturlin described the same thingunder the name of Dryobates leuconotus ussuriensis, from specimenstaken at Sidemi, in the southernmost part of Ussuriland, near theKorean boundary. In the same paper I described as new Dryobatesleucotos iissurianus from central Ussuriland, a quite different form.Mr. Buturlin's ussuriensis is the same as my coreensis, and the lattertherefore lapses into the synonymy of the former; but his nameussuriensis preoccupied my name ussurianus used for quite a differentbird, which he has consequently renamed. Mr. Buturlin had thekindness to straighten out the whole matter in correspondence, andlater published an account of this somewhat curious uomenclatorialentanglement, at the same time taking the opportunity of moreclearly bringing out the differential characters of the forms. There are two males and two females of t his subspecies in Mr. Jouy'scollection, taken at Fusan on September 30, and October 3, L885.
