An artistic reconstruction of Isthminia panamensis, 
a new fossil dolphin from Panama, feeding on a 
flatfish. Many features of this new species appear 
similar to today’s ocean dolphins, yet the new fossil 
species is more closely related to the living Amazon 
River dolphin. The fossils of Isthminia panamen-
sis were collected from marine rocks that date 
to a time (around 6 million years ago) before the 
Isthmus of Panama formed and a productive Central 
American Seaway connected the Atlantic and Pacific 
oceans.

esta nueva especie parecen similares a los delfines 
oceánicos de hoy, sin embargo, las nuevas especies 
fósiles están más estrechamente relacionadas con 
el delfín del río Amazonas del presente. Los fósiles 
de Isthminia panamensis se obtuvieron de rocas 
marinas que datan de una época (hace unos 6 mil-
lones de años) antes de que el Istmo de Panamá se 
formara, separando los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico.

Marian Carlson, the director of life sciences at the Simons Foundation, toured STRI 
facilities including the Gamboa outdoor laboratories with STRI staff scientist Klaus 
Winter (R) and deputy director Bill Wcislo (L).

IUCN HONORS STANLEY HECKADON 
The Panama committee of the International Union for the Conservation 
of Nature honored STRI staff scientist Stanley Heckadon (center) for his 
contributions to conservation in Panama at its regional forum this week in 
Panama City. Heckadon was joined by STRI director Matt Larsen (L) and 
Argelis Ruiz, STRI’s administrator of the canopy crane access system.

El comité en Panamá de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la 
Naturaleza honró al científico del Smithsonian, Stanley Heckadon (cen-
tro) por sus contribuciones a la conservación en Panamá durante su foro 
regional celebrado esta semana en la Ciudad de Panamá. Heckadon estuvo 
acompañado por el director del Smithsonian Matt Larsen (izq.) y Argelis 
Ruíz, administradora del sistema de grúas de acceso al dosel.
NEW DONATIONS HELP STRI  
MEET SCHOLARSHIP GOAL 
This week, STRI received a $50,000 donation from CFM 
(GE Aviation) for the Panama Fellowship Program. 
Director Matt Larsen (bottom photo, center) and Pedro 
Heilbron (second from left), Copa Airlines CEO and 
Fundación Smithsonian Chair, joined GE executives to 
celebrate this important contribution. They are (L-R) Jim 
Finnigan, Doug Izarra and Jose Kling.  
 Last month, Pedro Coparropa, the Vice President 
of Corporate Social Responsibility for the Fundación 
Ricardo Pérez García, presented STRI with a $25,000 do-
nation (top photo).  
 These contributions and other recent gifts to STRI 
enabled STRI to reach a $1 million challenge in which 
the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched STRI-raised 
funds, resulting in a total $2 million contribution to 
STRI’s endowment for fellowships. One of the outcomes of 
this effort will be to expand STRI recruitment of talented 
students from Panama as part of our goal to improve sci-
entific capacity in Panama and elsewhere in the Americas.

Esta semana, el Smithsonian recibió una donación de

Smithsonian, se unieron a ejecutivos de GE para celebrar 
esta importante contribución. Incluidos en la imagen están
